AEO and GEO, explained for wedding businesses

The short answer: AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) are the practice of making your business the answer AI assistants give when couples ask questions like "best wedding venues in Udaipur" or "candid wedding photographers in Bangalore". Unlike classic SEO, which fights for a position on a page of links, AEO fights for a mention inside a single spoken-style answer. The main levers: being described consistently across the open web, earning third party citations, publishing content that directly answers real questions, and keeping reviews fresh.

Something changed in how couples plan weddings, and most wedding businesses haven't noticed yet.

Five years ago, a newly engaged couple opened Google and typed "wedding venues near me". They got ten blue links and three ads, and your job was to be one of those links. That game had rules everyone learned: keywords, backlinks, a decent website.

Now watch a couple plan in 2026. They open ChatGPT or Perplexity and type something much more human: "We're 200 guests, budget is around 40 lakh, we want something near water but not a beach cliché. Where should we look?" And the assistant answers with three or four names.

Not ten links. Three or four names.

If your business isn't one of those names, you didn't lose the click. You never existed in the conversation.

What AEO actually is

Answer engine optimization is everything you do so that AI assistants, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews, mention and recommend your business when the question is about your category and your city. GEO (generative engine optimization) is a near synonym you'll see used interchangeably.

The critical difference from SEO: an AI answer has maybe three slots, not ten, and there's no page two. The consolation prizes are gone. This makes the game more brutal and more valuable at the same time.

How assistants decide who to recommend

AI assistants don't crawl your website at question time and judge your design. They synthesize from what the open web already says about you. In practice, a few things dominate:

What this means for a wedding business

It means the work is different from what your agency has been selling you. Reels alone don't do it. Ads don't do it at all, assistants don't read ads. The work looks like this:

  1. Answer real questions on your own site. Every real wedding you host, plan, shoot or decorate can become a page that answers something couples actually ask. "What does a 200 guest wedding at a lakeside venue actually cost?" beats "Our Gallery".
  2. Get onto the surfaces assistants read. Directories, local features, city listicles, review platforms. Unglamorous, compounding.
  3. Keep your identity consistent everywhere. One name, one category, one story, repeated across every listing you have.
  4. Generate and answer reviews continuously. Not a burst when you remember. A loop that runs after every event.
  5. Measure it. Ask the assistants your customers' questions every week and record who gets named. If you're not measuring, you're guessing.

Why weddings are the perfect storm for AEO

Wedding buyers are first time buyers. They don't know the vendor landscape, they're overwhelmed, and they trust a confident recommendation more than a page of links. That's exactly the buyer AI answers were made for. And wedding purchases are high value and low frequency, so there's no second chance with the same customer. The vendors who occupy the answer slots in a city will quietly take a disproportionate share of that city's weddings, and nobody else will even see it happening.

The honest caveats

Two things you should know before anyone sells you AEO magic. First, nobody controls AI answers; anyone promising a guaranteed slot is lying. The work moves probabilities, strongly, but it's gardening, not switch flipping. Second, answer shares move around. Being cited this month doesn't mean you're cited next month, which is why this is a continuous practice, not a one time project.

That's also why we built the measurement in first. Kavi probes ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews every day with the questions couples in your market actually ask, tracks who gets named, and then runs the content, citation and review work that changes the answer. If you'd rather see it than read about it, that's exactly what the report shows.
